​The 2023 Tax Free Weekend runs Friday, August 4 at 12:00 a.m. through Sunday, August 6 at 11:59 p.m.

​​What you nee​d to know:

  • South Carolina’s annual Tax Free Weekend starts this Friday at 12:00 a.m. and ends Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

  • For 72 hours, tax-free items include computers, printers, school supplies, clothing and accessories, shoes, and certain bed and bath items. These tax-free items can be ​purchased in-store or online.

  • Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $26.2 ​​​million in tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend.


SC Tax Free Weekend - Let's Shop! 

​Parents, students, and others searching for savings on a variety of back-to-school items can enjoy 72 hours free of Sales Tax starting Friday as part of South Carolina's annual Tax Free Weekend.

The 2023 Tax Free Weekend runs Friday, August 4 at 12:00 a.m. through Sunday, August 6 at 11:59 p.m. Under the law, the Tax Free Weekend must begin the first Friday of each August and conclude 72 hours later.

Eligible items can be purchased online and in-store without paying the state's 6% Sales Tax and any applicable local taxes during Tax Free Weekend, often called the Sales Tax Holiday.

Tax-free items include:

  • Computers and printers
  • School supplies
  • Clothing and accessories
  • Shoes
  • Certain bed and bath items

These tax-free items can be new or used and are eligible regardless of price.

Items not exempt from Sales Tax include:

  • Digital cameras
  • Smartphones
  • Jewelry
  • Cosmetics
  • Eyewear
  • Wallets
  • Watches
  • Furniture

Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $26.2 million in tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend.

​Reminders for Retailers:

  • All retailers who sell eligible items must participate in the Tax Free Weekend and cannot collect Sales Tax from their customers on eligible purchases.
  • Review Revenue Ruling #19-4​ for FAQs and Information Letter #23-7 for a complete list of exempt and non-exempt items.
  • ​A retailer toolkit with graphics and sample posts for social media and retailer-specific FAQs is available at dor.sc.gov/retailer-toolkit
  • Sales of eligible tax-free items during the Tax Free Weekend should be reported and taken as a deduction on your August Sales Tax return, which is due in September.
