TAX DAY IS LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  -

Tax Day is less than a month away - Do you need to request an extension?

Individual Income Tax returns for tax year 2024 are due May 1, 2025 – less than one month from today.

If you haven’t gathered your documents and started the filing process, consider requesting an extension, which gives you until October 15, 2025 to file.

  • You do not have to provide a reason to the SCDOR.
  • However, you still must pay what you owe by the May 1, 2025 deadline.

There are three ways to ask for an extension:
  • If you don’t owe any taxes and are requesting a federal extension from the IRS, you do not need to request one from the SCDOR. Keep a copy of your federal request for your records.
  • If you owe taxes, MyDORWAY is the quickest and easiest way to ask for an extension. Your payment on MyDORWAY automatically submits your filing extension request. Visit dor.sc.gov/pay and select Individual Income Tax Payment to get started. You must pay at least 90 percent of the total amount due with your extension request.
  • To request an extension by paper, submit the SC4868, Request for Extension of Time to File to the address listed on the form. Include the attached voucher when sending in your payment.

Make sure that you check the extension box on the front of your SC1040 when it’s time to file.

🛡️Fighting fraud is the SCDOR's highest priority
We take every step possible to verify your return—even if it means processing takes a little longer. Tax return and refund processing is expected to take up to 8 weeks from the date you file so that we can use all available tools to check for fraud. Remember–Protecting your refund is worth the wait.
