HORRY COUNTY WOMAN CHARGED WITH TAX EVASION AND PREPARING FALSE TAX RETURNS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  -

SCDOR agents arrested an Horry County woman on Monday and charged her with seven counts of making false or fraudulent tax returns and seven counts of tax evasion.

Taimar L. Thomas, 42, of Conway, prepared South Carolina Individual Income Tax returns for taxpayers for tax years 2017-2023 using fraudulent deductions and business expenses, according to arrest warrants. The taxpayers were unaware of and did not consent to the fraudulent deductions and expenses. Because of the false tax returns, the taxpayers received tax refunds totaling $25,701 more than they were entitled to receive.

In addition, warrants allege that Thomas filed South Carolina returns for herself over the same time period claiming deductions and expenses to which she was not entitled. As a result, Thomas evaded $17,565 in state Income Tax.

If convicted, Thomas faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for each count of preparing false or fraudulent returns and five years and/or a fine of $500 for each count of tax evasion. She is being held in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway pending a bond hearing.

The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
