BERKELEY COUNTY EDUCATION CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT TAX TO START MARCH 1

​​ Sales Tax in Berkeley County to increase by 1% ​

​​What you nee​d to know:

  • Beginning March 1, 2023, Berkeley County will implement a 1% Education Capital Improvement Sales Tax.

  • As a result, the Sales Tax in Berkeley County will increase from 8% to 9%.

  • The Education Capital Improvement Tax, passed by voters in November 2022, will fund the building of three schools, the renovations to four others, and improvements to athletic facilities at eight high schools.




The Sales & Use Tax rate in Berkeley County changes on March 1, 2023.

Berkeley County taxpayers will begin paying a new 1% Education Capital Improvement Tax following voters' approval last fall.

Because of this change, the Sales & Use Tax rate in Berkeley County increases from 8% to 9%.  The 9% includes the 6% state Sales Tax, a 1% Local Option Sales Tax, a 1% Transportation Tax, and the new 1% Education Capital Improvement Tax.

The new Education Capital Improvement Tax can last for seven years and will fund the creation of three schools, the renovation and expansion of three high schools and a middle school, and improvements to athletic facilities at eight high schools, according to the Berkeley County School District.
