October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month—a great time for all South Carolinians to make sure they’re protecting themselves from tax-related cybersecurity threats. Here are some tips to keep you safe from cybercriminals and unscrupulous tax preparers:
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication. Add a passkey to your MyDORWAY account, so you can log in using your fingerprint, face, or a PIN instead of a password.
- Don’t reply to unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media messages claiming to be from the IRS or SCDOR. Fraudsters often pose as government agencies to trick you into sharing personal information or sending money. If you owe money to the SCDOR, we’ll let you know by mailing you a notice, not by sending you an unexpected text or email.
- Only hire an IRS-certified tax professional to help you file your return. Use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications to find a preparer and make sure they have an IRS-issued Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) before handing over your sensitive financial information.
