SCDOR Tax Tips

What you need to know:

  • If you owe money after filing your Individual Income Tax return, the SCDOR recommends paying online using MyDORWAY, our free online tax portal. It’s faster and safer than sending a paper check.

  • You can also choose to draft your payment from your checking or savings account when you file your return.

  • To pay by paper check, mail your check along with the correct payment voucher to the address listed on the voucher.

In 2023, taxpayers made over 638,000 Individual Income Tax payments to the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR). If you owe money after filing your Individual Income Tax return this year, the SCDOR recommends making your payment electronically using MyDORWAY, our free online tax portal. Not quite sure how to make that happen? We have tips to help!

But first – remember, the deadline to file tax year 2023 returns is April 15, 2024. If you file for an extension, remember that the extension is for filing your return, not paying what you owe. Failure to pay your bill by the April 15 deadline may lead to penalties and interest.

If you're making a payment, MyDORWAY is the best option!

  • The SCDOR recommends making your payment using MyDORWAY at dor.sc.gov/pay – It's faster and safer than mailing a paper check. You can skip the trip to the post office and avoid your check getting lost in the mail.
    • To make your payment from the MyDORWAY homepage, click Make a Payment, then select Individual Income Tax Payment. After entering your SSN or ITIN, choose Return Payment to pay what you owe, or Extension Payment if you're also requesting an extension to file. If you're making a payment on your 2023 return, choose 31-Dec-2023 as your filing period.
    • On MyDORWAY, you can pay using a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover), or your checking or savings account.
    • Filing a South Carolina return for the first time? If you owe a balance after filing or plan to make estimated payments, you can now pay electronically on MyDORWAY! Note to tax pros: This is a new feature for 2024, so make sure your clients know about this option!
    • If you want to file for an extension, paying on MyDORWAY can automatically submit your request. No paperwork or forms required.

If you're not using MyDORWAY, here are your other options:

  • If you file a return electronically, your tax preparation software should allow you to make a draft from your bank account to pay your balance. That's also a better option than mailing a paper check.
  • Filing a paper return? If you submit a payment with it, don't forget to enter your withdrawal date and withdrawal amount on line 36 of your SC1040.
  • If you are filing a paper return, have a balance due, and choose to pay by paper check, make sure to include the correct payment voucher (SC1040V for return payments, SC0104ES for estimated payments (SC1040ES), or SC4868 for extension payments).

Mail your check to the address listed on the voucher. Payment vouchers are available at dor.sc.gov/forms.

Making estimated payments? Here's some additional info just for you:

  • You can make a quarterly estimated tax payment without creating a MyDORWAY account by visiting dor.sc.gov/pay, then choosing Individual Income Tax Payment. After entering your name and SSN, choose Estimated Payment on the next screen.
  • When making an estimated payment for tax year 2024 on MyDORWAY, choose 31-Dec-2024 as your Filing Period, regardless of which quarter you're making your payment in.
  • For most taxpayers, estimated payments for tax year 2024 are due April 15, June 17, September 16, and January 15, 2025.
  • Taxpayers who make quarterly estimated payments are encouraged to sign up for a MyDORWAY account and log in before making their payments. Get started by visiting dor.sc. gov/mydorway-signup.
