Protect your refund!
The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) and the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) have tips for preventing tax fraud and protecting your identity.

Notices

The SCDOR sends hundreds of thousands of notices to taxpayers each year. If you receive a notice, read it carefully as soon as possible. Every notice contains useful information about what you need to know and what you need to do. Most issues can be resolved quickly if you follow the instructions on your notice. If you have questions, we are here to help.

Common reasons the SCDOR may send you a notice:

You have a balance due.
You are due a larger or smaller refund.
We have a question about your return or need additional information or documents.
We need to verify your identity. We may ask you to send us additional documents or complete either the Identity Verification Quiz or Individual Code Verification on MyDORWAY.
We changed your return.
A claimant agency partnered with us to collect a debt you owe them.

Protect yourself from potential scams!
If you believe the notice you received did not really come from the SCDOR, please call 1-844-898-8542 immediately.

What if I ignore my notice?

Do not ignore the notice. If you do not resolve your notice, you may face the following penalties:

The SCDOR can levy or garnish your wages
The SCDOR can revoke your business license
The SCDOR may place a tax lien on your property
The SCDOR may charge interest on top of any existing debt
You may not receive your tax refund

Avoid penalties by taking steps to resolve your notice as quickly as possible!

How do I identify my notice?

The first step you should take is to find out which notice you have received. Every notice from the SCDOR will include the following information:

Title: Located in the center of the header
Notice number: Usually located on the top-right corner of the notice. Sometimes, you may find the notice number in the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of the notice.
Your name and address: The notice should have your name and address near the top-left corner, under the header. If you believe we reached you by mistake, contact the SCDOR representative or division listed on your notice immediately.
Purpose: Each notice will clearly state the reason that we sent it, usually underneath your address.
Outstanding items: This will outline what you need to do to resolve the issue. This is often an unpaid balance or documents you need to provide.
Contact information: This includes an email address, mailing address, and/or phone number for the SCDOR representative or division who sent you the notice.

How do I resolve my notice?

What you need to do will depend on the notice you received, and steps should be clearly explained in your notice. Generally, you may be asked to:

Pay the amount due

You can pay online on our free tax portal, MyDORWAY.
You can mail your payment along with the voucher from the notice to the address on the notice.

Request a Payment Plan Agreement

If you are not able to pay in full, you may be eligible for a Payment Plan Agreement. Learn more here.

Send copies of your missing documents to the SCDOR

You can mail copies of the requested documents to the address listed on your notice.

Verify your identity

Your notice may direct you to dor.sc.gov/VerifyID or dor.sc.gov/VerifyCode to provide information to verify your identity.

What if I have questions about my notice?

If you read through your notice and still have questions, we are here to help. Contact information should be provided on the left side of the notice near the bottom of the page. Please use the specific contact information provided on the notice if you have any questions. If your notice does not have specific contact information, call 1-844-898-8542 for assistance.

If you want to have someone else discuss the notice with the SCDOR, they must have a valid power of attorney on file with the SCDOR before talking to our representatives.

What if I disagree with my notice?

If you believe you have already paid the amount listed on your notice, please mail copies of canceled checks and supporting documents to the address listed on your notice.
If you still disagree with the findings of your notice, you have the right to appeal.
If your notice states that the SCDOR is collecting debt on behalf of another agency, you need to contact the other agency with questions. These debts are collected through the Setoff Debt and GEAR programs.

If you’ve already tried to resolve your notice through normal SCDOR channels, the SCDOR Taxpayer Advocate is available to help you with questions and concerns.
