South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) agents today arrested a York County funeral home owner on three counts of failure to file Sales Tax returns and one count of operating without a retail license.
Bridgett Michelle Wright, 42, is the owner of Wright Funeral Home in York County. According to SCDOR agents, Wright operated the business without a valid retail sales license from 2014 through 2020. From 2017 through 2019, Wright made retail sales totaling $488,701 and collected $18,974 in Sales Tax, but did not file any Sales Tax returns or pay any Sales Tax collected and due to the state, according to warrants.
If convicted, Wright faces a $10,000 fine and/or one year in prison for each count of failure to file a tax return and a $200 fine or 30 days in jail for operating without a retail license. Wright is being held at the York County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
