7 tips to help you pay your Individual Income Tax bill

If you owe a balance after filing your Individual Income Tax return, the SCDOR recommends that you try to pay what you owe when you file.

The easiest way to pay is using MyDORWAY, our free online tax portal – It's faster and safer than mailing a paper check, plus you avoid mail processing. Visit dor.sc.gov/pay​ and select Individual Income Tax Payment to get started.

Here are 3 tips when paying your balance using MyDORWAY:

1. Select Return Payment to pay what you owe on your return.
   • If you’re making a payment on your 2024 return, choose 31-Dec-2024 as your filing period.
2. Select Extension Payment if you’re filing an extension for your 2024 return.
   • Remember – the extension is for filing your return, not paying your balance, so if you don’t pay what you owe by the May 1, 2025 deadline, you may incur interest and penalties.
3. Those who are self-employed, contract workers, or don’t have taxes withheld may need to make quarterly estimated payments throughout the year. If that’s you, select Estimated Payment as your payment type.
   • If you’re making estimated payments, consider signing up for a MyDORWAY account and logging in to make your payments. Get started at dor.sc.gov/mydorway-signup.
   • For tax year 2025, estimated payments are due April 15, June 16, September 15, and January 15, 2026.
   • One common mistake to avoid – if you owe at least $100 on your Individual Income Tax return, but you don’t make estimated payments, you may be charged a penalty, even if you pay the full amount due by the Individual Income Tax deadline.
   • When making an estimated payment on MyDORWAY, the filing period should always be the last day of the tax year, not the quarter that you’re filing. So, for example, all estimated payments made for the 2025 tax year should have the filing period of 31-Dec-2025, regardless of when you’re making the payment.

Here are 4 tips if you choose a different payment method:

4. If you file electronically, your tax preparation software should allow you to make a draft from your bank account to pay your balance. However, do not enter your bank account information if you intend to pay using a different method or enter into a payment plan with the SCDOR.
5. Be cautious of third-party online bill payment websites when paying your SCDOR bills online. Third-party sites, such as DOXO, are not affiliated with the SCDOR, and the SCDOR cannot accept responsibility for transactions made through these sites.
6. If you’re filing a paper return, have a balance due, and choose to pay by paper check, make sure to include the correct payment voucher (SC1040V for return payments, SC0104ES for estimated payments, or SC4868 for extension payments).
   • Mail your check to the address listed on the voucher. Vouchers are available at dor.sc.gov/forms.
7. Paper filers who owe a balance can also make an ACH payment by entering their withdrawal date and withdrawal amount on line 36 of their SC1040.​

Remember – due to relief granted in the wake of Hurricane Helene, South Carolina returns are due May 1, 2025, ​along with any balance due.
