Tax Free Weekend starts tomorrow

South Carolina shoppers can save on a variety of school year essentials without paying Sales Tax during the state's annual 72-hour Tax Free Weekend, which begins tomorrow—Friday, August 1 at 12:01 a.m.—and continues through Sunday, August 3 at midnight.

Tax Free Weekend information for South Carolina media
The SCDOR’s Public Information Office has created a virtual interview video to help media with their Tax Free Weekend coverage. TV stations are encouraged to use video clips from the interview video in their Tax Free Weekend packages, and all media can refer to the virtual interview for answers to common Tax Free Weekend questions.

Eligible items are tax-exempt…

from the state's 6% Sales Tax and any applicable local taxes.
whether they are new or used.
regardless of their price.
no matter where they are purchased.

All retailers who sell eligible items participate in Tax Free Weekend and cannot collect Sales Tax from their customers on purchases of eligible items. This includes online purchases delivered into South Carolina.

Tax-exempt items include:

School supplies used in the classroom or at home for school assignments, including musical instruments, calculators, and headphones
Computers & technology, including printers and software
Heads up – computer parts and accessories, including monitors and keyboards, are only tax-exempt when sold as a package with a computer.
All clothing & footwear, including graduation caps and gowns, swimwear, school uniforms, and athletic shoes
Certain bed & bath items, including bed spreads, sheets, pillows, towels, and shower curtains

Tips for retailers:

Spread the word about your shop’s Tax Free Weekend deals using the hashtag #SCtaxfree.
Sales of eligible tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend should be reported and taken as a deduction on your August Sales Tax return (due September 20).
