Individual Income Tax deadline is Monday

What you need to know:
2023 South Carolina Individual Income Tax returns are due Monday, April 15, 2024.
File online and choose direct deposit for faster and more accurate processing.
If you don’t think you’ll be able to file by Monday, you may need to request an extension.

If you've waited until the last minute to file your tax return, well, it's almost the last minute. Monday, April 15, 2024 is the deadline to file your 2023 South Carolina Individual Income Tax return.

As of April 5, more than 1.6 million returns have been filed, about 96% of them electronically. If you've put off filing until now, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) has the following tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible.

Last-minute filing reminders

Make sure you have all W-2s, 1099s, and other necessary documents before you file – If you need a copy of your 2021 or 2022 return, remember you can now access transcripts of past SC Individual Income Tax returns using MyDORWAY (MyDORWAY.dor.sc.gov), the SCDOR's free online tax portal. If you're looking for transcripts of past federal returns, log in to your IRS Online Account.
Choose the online filing method that's right for you – Filing online with a reputable provider is convenient, secure, and accurate. Many South Carolinians are eligible to file online for free with easy-to-use tax preparation software. Visit dor.sc.gov/iit-filing to view all of your filing options.
Choose direct deposit – Direct deposit is the fastest and safest refund option, since your refund is deposited directly into your bank account. Learn more about why direct deposit is the SCDOR's preferred refund option at dor.sc.gov/refund.
Be sure the SCDOR and your employer have your current address – Customers with a MyDORWAY account can update their address with the SCDOR by logging in, clicking the More tab, and selecting Manage Names & Addresses. Those without a MyDORWAY account can use the SC8822I.

Need more time to file? You may need to request an extension.

If you don't think you'll be able to file before Monday's deadline, you can request an extension, which pushes your deadline to file until October 15, 2024.
Before you ask for an extension, keep in mind that extending the deadline for filing your return does not delay the deadline for paying any tax due. If you expect to owe a balance, you are still required to pay what you owe by April 15, 2024.
If you don't owe taxes and are requesting an extension from the IRS, you do not need to request one from the SCDOR. Keep a copy of your federal extension request for your records.
If you owe additional taxes, the fastest and easiest way to request an extension is to pay what you owe on MyDORWAY. Visit dor.sc.gov/pay and select Individual Income Tax Payment to get started. Your payment on MyDORWAY automatically submits your filing extension request.
You can also submit your request by paper using the SC4868, Request for Extension of Time to File. Use the attached voucher to send in payment for any balance due on your taxes.

Waiting on a refund?

Tax return and refund processing takes up to 8 weeks to allow the SCDOR to use all available tools to check for fraud and protect your refund. If you choose a paper check refund, your processing time may be longer.
After you file, check your refund status online at dor.sc.gov/refund.

Need to pay what you owe?

If you owe money after filing your return, the SCDOR recommends making your payment at dor.sc.gov/pay.
- Select Individual Income Tax Payment, then enter your SSN and Legal Name to get started.
- On the next screen, select Return Payment.
