Get ready! South Carolina's 2024 Tax Free Weekend starts tomorrow

What you need to know:
South Carolina’s 2024 Tax Free Weekend begins Friday, August 2 and continues through Sunday, August 4.
For 72 hours, eligible items including computers, school supplies, clothing, formal wear, graduation caps and gowns, purses, and certain bed and bath items can be purchased tax-free, in-store or online.
Last year, South Carolina shoppers purchased more than $30.4 million in tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend.

South Carolina shoppers can save on a variety of school year essentials without paying Sales Tax during the state's annual 72-hour Tax Free Weekend, which begins tomorrow.

SCDOR reminds all South Carolinians that tax-exempt items can be purchased in-store or online Friday, August 2 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, August 4 at midnight.

Here's what you need to know about Tax Free Weekend:

Eligible items for the Tax Free Weekend can be purchased online and in-store without paying the state's 6% Sales Tax and any applicable local taxes during the weekend.
Tax-free items include computers, computer software, calculators, printers, printer ink cartridges, bathmats and rugs, art supplies, diapers, earbuds and headphones, purses, formal wear, and shoes. Eligible items can be new or used and are eligible regardless of price.

Items that are not exempt from Sales Tax during Tax Free Weekend include digital cameras, smartphones, mattresses and box springs, video game consoles, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches, and furniture.

25 years of Tax Free Weekend

South Carolina held its first Tax Free Weekend in 2000. The event was created by the South Carolina Legislature and is outlined in SC Code Section 12-36-2120(57).
Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $30.4 million in tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend, saving more than $1.8 million in Sales Tax.

Information for retailers

All retailers who sell eligible items participate in the Tax Free Weekend and cannot collect Sales Tax from their customers on eligible purchases.
Retailers can find graphics, sample posts for social media, and retailer-specific FAQs at dor.sc.gov/taxfreeweekend.
Sales of eligible tax-free items during Tax Free Weekend should be reported and taken as a deduction on your August Sales Tax return (which is due in September).
